The Campbells of Argyll

The Campbells of Argyll Gifts for Book Lovers is wellillustrated with contemporary prints and portraits, together with pictures of Inveraray Castle, the ancestral home of the Campbells.

This fascinating album tells of the lives and times of leading members of this great family which, generation after generation, has played an important part in public events in Scottish and non-Scottish history.

Some of the remarkable Men described are:

·   Sir Neil Campbell who supported King Robert Bruce

  ·   The fifth Earl of Argyll who rallied to the side of Queen Mary

 · And the Marquess of Argyll, the most famous of the line

A Macdonald historian says that they are “men of much natural ability, and the prominence of the nine Campbell earls of Argyll in Scottish history and of the subsequent dukes in the history of Great Britain is unsurpassed by any other British Family”.

The American Negro: Report on The Condition of the South

One of the most prophetic cautions was Carl Schurz’s The American Negro: Report on The Condition of the South Gifts for Book Lovers based on the states of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana from an extensive tour of that part of the country during the summer of 1865.
This study of the history of that period describes Southern conditions immediately after the war, is well worth reading.
Some of his opinions were:

·       Southern people have not abandoned their pro-slavery mindsets

·       In self-sufficiency, these states will be near-slavery

·       And new civil governments are not yet possible.

Seventy-nine days of travel and observation in the south only strengthen Schurz’s convictions.

The book has some library stickers. No highlighting.
